Touch

We have heard that studies show that massage can help the body to release Endorphins (natural pain killers), thus providing relaxation, reducing pain, promoting inner peace, boosting the immune system, and encouraging gentle body awareness. But the body also possesses the innate wisdom to naturally heal itself, so subtle encouragement of this natural process is the way to go.  With firm gentle body work (Touch), a sense of natural balance and well-being is stimulated.  With intentional Touch, self healing will begin as the body remembers to raise and circulate its' own energy to move toward ease and promote healing.

We all possess the gift of loving touch....  In massage, we touch. It's important to remember that this Touch can assist in our natural healing process on many levels and provide the sense of connection that we sometimes need to remember.. With human contact, the intention of touch is just as important, if not more so, than the touch itself.

Eastern / Western ideas

Because of my approach to sessions, I’m sometimes asked about the differences in Western and Eastern ideas. So, I'll speak about some difference here.  Massage therapy is known as manipulation of the soft tissues of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) through touch, movement, and pressure. Western ideas typically focus on manipulating the anatomy and physiology for physical reasons that will increase blood and lymphatic flow, assist in the elimination of stored waste, enhance immune system function, release tension and stress, reduce pain, and improve posture and flexibility.  The most common types of massage in the U.S. are Swedish, deep tissue, sports, trigger point, and myofascial release.

Eastern healing systems focus on balancing the flow of energy through energy centers (charkas), and/or energy pathways of the body (meridians), and working in the etheric. The therapist/practitioner determines areas where energy may need some assistance and through gentle touch or movement seeks to re-establish the free flow of energy through these areas. The practitioner may also suggest yogic moves/exercises, foods, breath-work, discuss thought patterns, and other ideas to influence the flows of energy for a specific situation. The therapeutic goal is directed towards balanced energy flow throughout the entire body. This free and balanced energy flow supports all the organs and functions of the body and will assist in physical, psychological, and spiritual health.  Approaches based on releasing blocked energy flow and assisting vitality include shiatsu, Jin Shin/acupressure, Reiki, Polarity therapy, reflexology, and several others.

In addition to the considerable benefits of enhanced physical function and energy balance and flow, massage also speaks to emotional, mental, sensory and spiritual concerns. This potential depth of influence is available through all forms of massage and depends on the awareness and development of the practitioner and the receptivity and intention of the client. As a therapist, with awareness and skills related to several teachings, I can offer you the opportunity to explore deeper levels of relaxation and peace, self-acceptance and awareness, emotional openness, a new and vital connection to your body, and also a feeling of trust and connection with another. Thus offering you the possibility of healing and self-development on many levels.
