Tips to enhance your Massage Therapy Experience: Life is a spiritual journey. Our journey of spiritual/love evolution is found through openness, connection, and purification of our inner selves. We are to help one another along this sacred path. Most of us know that massage helps us to relax, reduce pain, reconnect, find inner peace, and feel good. There are times, however, when a bodywork session seems particularly sacred and you feel as if you have entered a special state of being. Some feel as though they are floating above the table, have left their bodies, experience connection, or are in a peaceful floating cloud. Some simply feel peaceful and innocent. Some feel as though they are in a trance. Other's can actually experience the therapist's energy together with the spiritual essence and feel cared for and safe. Experiences like this can’t be forced, but there are conditions that will assist the flow of spiritual energy during the massage session. These include feeling safe, creating a meditative state, and letting go of preconceived ideas or expectations. First, it is important that you have a sense of safety...emotionally, physically, mentally, and even spiritually. Feeling safe includes feeling comfortable in your environment and confident with your therapist. You should feel listened to, cared for, know there is confidentiality between you and the therapist, and know that your therapist has compassion and respect for you. In addition to feeling safe with your therapist, you should feel an inner safety. This means trusting your ability to handle emotions and being open to changing thought patterns, so that you can allow yourself to feel fully. When you allow yourself to feel, even unpleasant emotions, you begin to open the door for spiritual energetic connection. Second, creating a meditative state is helpful. Finding a massage therapist with wonderful touch builds the foundation for this. When the massage feels great, you have less mental distraction about the bodywork. The exceptional touch can even be the object of concentration. If you find yourself caught up in thought, bring your awareness back to the physical sensations of the touch. Being aware of your own breath is also very helpful. You simply notice and follow your own breath without trying to judge it or change it. Just Be with your breath. It’s not necessary to force deep or slow breathing or wonder if you are breathing correctly. This type of effort could detract from the experience. Just bring gentle awareness to the breath and notice its flow in and out of the body. Finally, let go of expectations or desires of actually achieving a “spiritual” massage. Allow it to be what it is. If you spend all your time in the massage session striving to achieve something, you lose the opportunity to relax and let go. By relaxing and clearing your mind, you are actually just being. It’s in the moment of being that you can experience your spiritual essence...where you can ride the wave of spiritual energy in connection to oneness with everything. Again, receiving bodywork can be a powerful resource of healing and transformation. It takes both the therapist and the client to hold the sacred space for awareness and connection.
